Activity I – Cultural Visits

  1. Baoshan Temple (Qi Garden)
Baoshan Temple is the only temple in the country that received the "Luban Award." The main building, designed in the Late Tang Dyn”asty style, is famous for its precise structure, simplicity, and exquisite craftsmanship. With the sound of its bells in the morning and the drums in the evening, together with the sound of chanting that pervades the air, the temple offers a serene retreat and a rare moment of tranquility in the middle of busy city life.

  2. Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition
The Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition is China's only venue dedicated to showcasing folk art and cultural traditions from around the world. Its architecture, inspired by the "Chinese knot," reflects the exposition's theme of international folk art and harmonious co-existence. PRACTICAL INFO

In China, due to government regulations, several popular international apps, social media platforms, and even browsers are restricted or heavily monitored. Here are some notable examples and their alternatives:

  1. Social Media:

    • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram: These platforms are inaccessible in China. Instead, users often use WeChat as a comprehensive alternative for messaging, social networking, and even mobile payments.

    • YouTube: For video sharing, Youku Tudou and Bilibili are commonly used within China.

  2. Messaging Apps:

    • WhatsApp: While technically accessible via VPNs, it's unreliable. WeChat is the dominant messaging app used nationwide.

    • Telegram: Also accessible via VPNs, but alternatives like WeChat or QQ are more widely used within China.

  3. Browsers:

    • Google Chrome, Firefox: These browsers may face connectivity issues or have limited functionality. Microsoft Bing, Baidu Browser and UC Browser are popular alternatives.

  4. Search Engines:

    • Google Search: Accessible only through VPNs, with results filtered. Microsoft Bing and Baidu are the primary search engine used by Chinese internet users.

  5. Others:

    • Google Maps: Limited functionality without VPN. Baidu Maps or Amap (Autonavi) are widely used for navigation and location services.

Recommended Apps Before Traveling to China:

  • WeChat: We strongly recommend installing WeChat before your trip. It is essential for communication and is widely used as a payment method in China. Many shops, restaurants, and taxi drivers do not accept foreign credit cards, so mobile payment via WeChat is often the only option.

  • DiDi: Download the DiDi app, which functions as the “Chinese Uber.” It’s the most convenient way to book rides, especially in cities where taxis can be hard to hail or where language barriers may make communication difficult.
